Repenser la francophonie Québécoise, this event aims to facilitate dialogue on the challenges facing French as a common public language in Quebec society.

Co-sponsored by The Montreal Gazette and the Fondation Notre Home Foundation, our conference features a conversation with Jean-Pierre Corbeil, Mario Polèse, and Jean-Benoît Nadeau, key contributors to the book. Gazette columnist Allison Hanes will moderate the panel discussion, which will be followed by a Q&A session.

Jean-Pierre Corbeil is an adjunct professor in the sociology department of Laval University and a researcher at the Observatoire démographique et statistique de l’espace francophone. During his career, he notably directed the Center for Ethnocultural, Language and Immigration Statistics at Statistics Canada. In addition to teaching about languages issues and dynamics, he has studied the linguistic situation in Canada and Quebec for more than 25 years.

Linguistic columnist for L'Actualité magazine Jean-Benoît Nadeau has written nearly 1,500 reports and columns and around 15 books including The Story of French/La Grande aventure de la langue française and The Story of Spanish. A native of Sherbrooke, Jean-Benoît is a graduate of McGill University and a fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs.

Mario Polèse is Professor Emeritus at INRS (Institut national de la recherche scientifique) and adjunct professor at the McGill School of Urban Planning. He has written extensively on the economy of cities and regions. His two most recent books are: The Wealth and Poverty of Cities: Why Nations Matter (Oxford University Press, 2020); Le Miracle Québécois (Boréal, 2021).

Columnist Allison Hanes started working at The Montreal Gazette in 2000. Since then, she has worked in the National Assembly bureau in Quebec City, covered the justice beat at the Montreal courthouse, served as assignment editor and been a member of the newspaper’s editorial board.
